Fuel Injection Service

Is it ever really needed?

Dealers are always trying to sell the $159 fuel injection service and
recommend it every 15,000 miles. Seems kind of steep to do that
often. The service consists of a $75 parts kit and the rest labor.

Having driven hundreds of thousands of miles and never an injection
problem, I'm hesitant, but there may be a point that it is a good
idea. I do know that people have had injector problems, but I'm not
sure just how often it comes up.

Opinions? Comments?

IMO it's worthless for any car I've driven.

Pretty much what I thought I'd have spent thousands over the years if I
followed the dealer service recommendations.

If can help if you have been running crappy fuel or if the vehicle sets
long enough that the injectors dry out at the pintle caps. Most of the
better cleaners dissolve the varnish and crud and improve the spray
pattern.

Most of the time I use Shell and never had problems. They brag about
their additives and it seems to work.

I toss a bottle of injector cleaner in the gas at every oil change and not
the overpriced stuff.
Carbon build up on the intake valves is more of a worry than plugged
injectors IMO. I only use top tier fuels to help with that issue.
That's gonna be a issue on the new DI motors since fuel with cleaners is no
longer is rinsing off the intake valves and this issue is starting to show
up on these motors.
