they didnt just find this problem now after 4 years out of production

Hard to say. Sometimes problems don't show up until a lot of time or
miles went by.

As for the media frenzy, do you have any stats on deaths? accidents?
burned out houses? If it was two vans that burnt you won't hear
anything. If a couple of people got killed, then the media starts to
circle.
